How does spiritual direction work?
God is the true Director at work in our lives. Your spiritual director simply serves as the channel through which God works to uncover and discover the Divine at work in your everyday experiences. The content of a direction session can simply be your life: whatever aspect, story, or experience you feel moved to bring to the session. You, your director, and God meet in holy conversation so “you may have life and have it more abundantly.” (John 10:10)
If God were trying to speak to you, would you hear? If God were either reassuring you or challenging you, would you be aware? When God has been supporting you, have you always noticed?
God is always with us, in the midst of our lives. Spiritual direction can help you to put your own anxieties and concerns into perspective and to be more open to the part that God is playing in your life.
Sometimes you need to talk to someone who can help you discern your spiritual path. That’s what we do in offering spiritual direction. We listen attentively to your sacred stories, we notice those shimmering moments when God's presence shines through, and we reflect back to you where we see God at work in your story and your life. We do this without judgment or prejudice, so that with God's gentle prompting you can discover your path for yourself.
Individual spiritual direction ordinarily involves a private meeting about once a month for an hour. The session usually begins in silent prayer as both director and directee collect themselves in the presence of God. Then, the person in direction will share whatever is real and important that is preoccupying them, or simply talk about what has been going on in his or her life. Then together the directee and director explore where God is present and what God’s invitation to the directee may be.
Spiritual direction is a wonderful gift to support you in becoming more aware of God’s presence, for helping you to see and savour the goodness that exists around you, and for sorting out difficult life situations and choices.
Spiritual direction can help you to contemplate on what is happening in your life, opening your eyes to see where you have been open to God and where you have denied God's loving presence. We can notice together the times we have let God in and those times we have refused God entry. God knows us far better than we know ourselves and with the help of spiritual direction we can ask to have our innermost selves revealed to us in all our sacredness.
